COURSE REGISTRY OVERVIEW
The Course Registry is the central source for K-12 courses which are, or historically have been, available for instruction within the Province. The Registry itself acts as a living repository for all courses offered in BC, and can be viewed or searched by Ministry program areas, schools and school boards, and the general public. Users can do a simple, advanced, or a specific course code search and pull up detailed information about a course, including course code, credit values, its start and end date (if applicable), published course title and catalogue description as well as other pertinent information.
The registry houses all open and closed:
- Ministry Developed courses
- Board/Authority Authorized courses
- External Credentials Locally Developed (LD) courses
- Career Program (CP) courses
Data changes are managed centrally by the Registry Coordinator

Codes
The Course Registry uses a unique coding system: the first 4 digits of the High School Transcript "HST" Code developed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and a three-digit number which will identify the unique set of learning outcomes associated with the course.
The MyEducation BC Course Codes have a maximum length of seven characters: five for the course code and two for the grade. The MyEd BC code structure is as follows:
- Type (1st character)
- Course Code (2nd through 5th character)
- Grade (6th and 7th character)
Hyphens are used as placeholders between the course code and grade if the course code is shorter than five characters. For example, the course code for Chemistry 11 is represented as MCH--11 (MCH followed by two hyphens and 11).
A TRAX Code consists of two fields using a total of eight characters: a five-character Course Code (CRSE_CODE) and a three-character Course Level (CRSE_LEVEL)
Each field is left-aligned. Spaces serve as placeholders if the Course Code is fewer than five characters long or if the Course Level is less than three characters long.
Most Course Codes are two to five characters in length. Most Course Levels are two numeric characters, with a third alphabetic character used when the same subject can be reported as two or more separate courses.
Examples:
- The course Chemistry 11 is represented as: CH, followed by three spaces, 11, and one space CH 11
- The course Work Experience 12 is represented as: WEX, followed by two spaces, then the three-character Course Level WEX 12A
Of the eight characters that span these two fields, the course level always starts in the 6th position.
