How Are We Doing?
Demographics
and Performance of Aboriginal Students in BC Public Schools
HIGHLIGHTS
- The number of
students who self-identify as Aboriginal is continuing to increase,
currently at 8.4%.
- There has been
a continuous increase in the off-reserve populations
- Due to the increases
in Aboriginal population, school districts have also increased their
populations.
- Grade 4 Reading
Comprehension - Aboriginal students meeting and/or exceeding expectations
have increased from 56% in 2001 to 62% in 2004.
- Grade 4 Numeracy
- the percent of Aboriginal students meeting and/or exceeding expectations
has increased from 58% in 2000 to 75% in 2004.
- Since 2001 the
number of Aboriginal students participating in Grade 7 Reading Comprehension
has increased.
- There has been
a continuous increase in the percentage of Aboriginal students meeting
and/or exceeding expectations, from 52% in 2001 to 58% in 2004 in
Grade 7 Reading Comprehension.
- Aboriginal Grade
7 FSA Writing participation rate has increased since 2001.
- Aboriginal Grade
7 Numeracy participation rate has increased since 2001.
- There has been
a continuous increase in the percentage of Aboriginal students meeting
and/or exceeding expectations from 55% in 2000 to 63% in 2004 in Grade
7 Numeracy.
- Aboriginal participation
in English 12 has increased from 37% in 2000-2001 to 42% in 2002-2003.
Aboriginal students when participating in English 12 do very well
on the provincial exam.
- Aboriginal participation
in Principles of Mathematics 12 has increased 2% over the last year.
- The Aboriginal
six-year Dogwood completion rate has increased from 42% in 2001-2002
to 46% in 2002-2003.
- The Aboriginal
Six-Year Dogwood Completion rate have increased 9% over a 5-year period,
almost twice of the non-Aboriginal Six-Year Dogwood Completion rate.
