Background
- School planning councils acknowledge the importance of parental involvement and formalize the role of parents in developing plans to improve student achievement in all schools in British Columbia.
- Legislation pertaining to School Planning Councils became law on July 1, 2002.
- School planning councils are advisory bodies. Their major responsibility is to develop, monitor and review school plans for student achievement in consultation with the school community.
- School plans are part of a provincial accountability framework to improve student results.

All regulations pertaining to Education are available from the Manual of School Law.
Legislation pertaining to School Planning Councils is included in Section 8 of the School Act. Sections 8 to 8.5 and 79.2 of the School Act create the legal framework for parents' advisory councils, school planning councils, school plans, and accountability contracts.
