Background

  • School planning councils acknowledge the importance of parental involvement and formalize the role of parents in developing plans to improve student achievement in all schools in British Columbia.
  • Legislation pertaining to school planning councils became law on July 1, 2002.
  • School planning councils are advisory bodies. Their major responsibility is to develop, monitor and review school plans for student achievement in consultation with the school community.
  • School plans are part of a provincial achievement framework to improve student results.

All regulations pertaining to Education are available from the Manual of School Law.

Legislation pertaining to school planning councils is included in the School Act. Part 2: Parents and Students - Sections 8 to 8.5, and Part 6: Boards of Education - Section 79.2 of the School Act create the legal framework for parents' advisory councils, school planning councils, school plans, and achievement contracts.
