Schooling Options for My Child
School Choices
A number of school choices are available today for British Columbia students, including public and independent (i.e. private) schools, online learning and other options. The range of choices include community, traditional or alternative schools, Aboriginal education programs, French immersion, special needs, full-day Kindergarten, pre-school, distributed learning, fine arts, dance, sports or trades. School boundaries are now open, and students can attend any school in the province, provided there is space. Check your local School District website for more information.

Personalized learning for each student in British Columbia means a shift from a set of broad, uniform learning outcomes and courses, to learning that is increasingly student-initiated and self directed.

Independent Schools

Homeschooling
The School Act permits parents to educate their children at home, but students must be registered with a recognized school in the province. Includes information on responsibilities of parents, school boards, and independent authorities.

Distributed Learning for Public Schools
Information on Distributed Learning (DL), which gives both rural and urban students in British Columbia improved access, more choice, and flexibility to learn outside classroom schedules.

French Programs
Information about French Programs and Language Initiatives, including First-Language Education (Francophone) and Second-Lanugage instruction (French Immersion and Core French).
Mandarin Bilingual Programs
School District No. 39 (Vancouver) currently offers a Mandarin bilingual program at Jamieson Elementary. MandarinForBCSchools.org is a group working to bring formal Mandarin bilingual education program to public schools.
