National and International Assessment Reports & Information
Student participation in national and international assessments provides important information about how the BC education system performs in relation to education systems across Canada and around the world.
National Assessments
- Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP)
PCAP provides Canada-wide information about achievement levels of 13-year old students. Each PCAP assessment has one major component (mathematics, reading and writing, or science) and also includes minor components in the other two areas.
PCAP replaces the School Achievement Indicators Program - SAIP, but continues to assess the same three core subjects.
International Assessments
- Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)
On a three-year cycle, PISA provides information about the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students in key subject areas as well as in a wider range of educational outcomes including students’ motivation to learn, their beliefs about themselves and their learning strategies. In each cycle, two-thirds of the testing time is devoted to a major domain: reading, mathematics including problem solving, and science.
In 2000 and 2003, PISA was administered in conjunction with the Canadian Longitudinal Youth in Transition Survey - YITS) to collect information about major transitions between education, training and work.
- Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
On a four-year cycle, TIMMS provides information about Grade 8 student achievement in mathematics and science.
