POLICY STATEMENT There is to be a board of school trustees for each school district. Elections of all trustees, to be known collectively as a general school election, must be held every three years. School boards or municipal councils are responsible for conducting trustee elections.
RATIONALE The guide, School Trustee Election Procedures in British Columbia 2008, brings together all salient features of the acts and regulations governing Board of Education elections to make them more accessible and comprehensible to the layperson and Board of Education officials. The guide is organized as a sequential overview of the principle stages of election procedures and is intended to serve as a quick reference. All relevant statute sections are listed to assist the study of the wording in the acts or regulations.

These Trustee Election Procedures are a guide, and are not intended to be a legal reference or text. These procedures are a resource to the relevant legislation.

LEGISLATION/ REGULATIONS

Sections 30 to 54 of the School Act create the legal framework for the establishment of Boards of Education, trustee qualifications, trustee elections, and the holding of office.

Sections 33 to 156 of the Local Government Act establish the legal framework for the conduct of elections.

POLICY Section 35 of the School Act states that elections of all trustees, to be known collectively as a general school election, must be held in 1993 and in every third year after that. General voting day for the general school election must be on the third Saturday of November in the year of the election.
