Policy Document: Personal Planning K to 7 and Career and Personal Planning 8 to 12 -- Opting for Alternate Delivery

Issued and in effect July 1, 2005. Revised policy

This policy replaces policy issued June 2000 and revised in 2004. The policy has been changed to include revised curriculum which will be available July 1, 2005 for optional implementation in September 2005 and required implementation in September 2006.

This page sets forth the Ministry policy entitled "Personal Planning K to 7 and Career and Personal Planning 8 to 12 -- Opting for Alternate Delivery".

POLICY STATEMENT

Students, and their parents, may opt for alternative delivery of topics in the personal development component of Personal Planning (PP) K to 7 and Career and Personal Planning (CAPP) 8 to 12.

RATIONALE

The purpose of this policy is to explain how students, and their parents, may opt for alternative delivery of topics in the personal development component of PP K to 7 and CAPP 8 to 12.

LEGISLATION/ REGULATIONS

PP K to 7 is a mandatory part of an educational program offered to all students. See Ministerial Order 295/95, the Required Areas of Study in an Educational Program Order.

CAPP 8 to 12 is mandatory for all students who enter Grade 10 before July 1, 2004, and CAPP 11/12 is a provincially prescribed graduation requirement for students who enter Grade 10 before July 1, 2004. See Ministerial Order 295/95, the Required Areas of Study in an Educational Program Order, and Ministerial Order 205/95, the Graduation Requirements Order.

Planning 10 is a provincially prescribed graduation requirement for students who enter Grade 10 on or after July 1, 2004. See Ministerial Order 302/04, the Graduation Program Order

POLICY

The Personal Development components of PP K to 7 and CAPP 8 to 12 address topics (e.g., self image, human sexuality, or violence in relationships) which some students and their parents or guardians may feel more comfortable addressing at home. In some cases, students, with their parents' or guardians' consent and in consultation with their school, may choose not to participate in classes when these topics are discussed and, instead, address the topics in an agreed upon alternative manner.

It is expected that students will complete the related learning outcomes and demonstrate their knowledge of the personal development topic(s) they have chosen to learn in an alternative manner.

This option is only available for topics that are part of the Personal Development component of PP K to 7 or CAPP 8 to 12. This option is not intended for any other curriculum.

PROCEDURES

School boards are expected to have policies for alternative delivery of these topics in place.

School boards are encouraged to develop a variety of ways for topics that students and their parents or guardians may feel more comfortable addressing at home to be covered through alternative delivery. They may also invite parents or guardians to propose alternatives for delivery of content, which are suitable to their needs.

There are several options that Boards of Education can provide for students who request the opportunity to complete topics that they may feel more comfortable addressing at home outside of regular classroom instruction. Examples include:
  • home instruction using a school-determined package of materials or other agreed upon materials
  • Distributed Learning (formerly distance education/distance electronic learning)
  • self-directed studies
