Deregulation

Consistent with the B.C. Government's initiative to reduce unnecessary red tape within three years, the Ministry of Education is strongly committed to streamlining the administration of education policy and reducing the regulatory burden on educators.

Regulatory Reform in the Ministry of Education

The objective of government's regulatory reform initiative is to achieve public policy goals more cost-effectively by reducing the burden on government, business, and society. For information about the government-wide deregulation initiative, please consult Straight Forward BC.

Regulations related to the Kindergarten to Grade 12 system are intended to ensure K-12 learners experience a high-quality education, and acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to reach their potential and contribute to society. Within this context, the Ministry of Education actively supports government's regulatory reform initiative.

In June 2004, the Ministry met its three-year reduction target and is committed to maintaining its current regulatory count -- or achieving even further reductions. The Ministry continues to review its legislation, regulation, policy, and policy instruments, and to identify opportunities to reduce the number and scope of existing and proposed regulatory requirements. In doing so, the Ministry will provide local Boards of Education and others more autonomy and flexibility in the delivery of education services.

Smart Regulation

To achieve the best outcomes with the least process, the Ministry uses a 'smart regulation' approach when developing education-related policies, regulations, and legislation. Smart regulation is focused on achieving the intent and outcome of regulations while prescribing fewer processes and procedures.
