ReadNow BC
Increase the number of children who read successfully
The Challenge:
- While B.C. schools are among the best in the world, results have levelled off – and in some cases have even declined.
- More than 11,000 students a year are not graduating from our schools.
- 20% of B.C. students have difficulty reading
Our Goals:
- To improve B.C. student’s ranking in international reading assessments from 3 rd to 1 st in Canada in the next 3 years and to 1 st in the world in the next 10 years.
- To increase the completion rate from 79% to 82% in the next 3 years and to 85% in the next 10 years.
How will Government achieve these goals?
As Government and partners move forward with ReadNow BC , other actions, in addition to the examples listed below, will be developed to ensure all British Columbians have opportunities to improve their literacy skills.
- Support school districts in developing innovative teaching practices.
- Create a web-based resource for B.C. educators to share effective teaching practices with other educators, parents and students.
- Provide new resources and booklets to help parents improve their childrens’ reading, including ReadNow BC DVDs.
- Implement a new Language Arts curriculum that emphasizes oral, reading and writing skills and a literacy assessment in schools across the province.
- Through the Education Guarantee, students who have not been able to develop the skills they need to suceed, will have free access to courses offered in the K-12 system through Learn Now BC – the Virtual School.
