ReadNow BC
Increase the number of Aboriginal people who read successfully
The Challenge:
- In 2005/06, only 47% of Aboriginal students graduated from high school compared to 79% province-wide - a difference of 32%.
Our Goals:
- To increase provincial and Aboriginal school graduation rates to 85% in the next 10 years.
- To increase the percentage of Grade 7 Aboriginal students reading within expectations based on Foundation Skills Assessment results from 44% to 56% in the next 3 years and 85% in the next 10 years.
- To increase the number of Aboriginal children participating in early learning programs and displaying readiness for Kindergarten
How will Government achieve these goals?
As Government and partners move forward with ReadNow BC, other actions, in addition to the examples listed below, will be developed to ensure all British Columbians have opportunities to improve their literacy skills.
- Develop a Memorandum of Understanding on early learning, childcare, and early childhood development between ministries and key Aboriginal stakeholders.
- Complete Aboriginal Enhancement Agreements in all 60 school districts in B.C.
- Support the development and implementation of Aboriginal adult literacy programs and services respecting Aboriginal culture and teaching practices.
- Develop an Aboriginal Family Literacy Strategy
- Develop Post-Secondary Aboriginal Service Plans to help Aboriginal learners to start, stay and succeed in post-secondary education and training.
