Kindergarten Books
The provincial government is providing every Kindergarten student in public school in the province with A Mountain Alphabet, a book for early readers, or Je suis Louna, a book for early readers in programme francophone.
A Mountain Alphabet was written by Margriet Ruurs and illustrated by Andrew Kiss. This book leads readers on a journey through the magnificent mountains of British Columbia. A black bear browsing on berries, a moose in the morning mist, a wolf walking through a winter wonderland – each painting captures a special mountain mood and invites the reader to discover intriguing animals, plants, and even the letter of the alphabet hidden in the picture.
Je suis Louna et je suis une artiste was written by Bertrand Gauthier and illustrated by Gérard Frischeteau. When Louna dreams of her future occupation, nothing can stop her! Dancer, singer, or storyteller, she is convinced these professions will make her happy. Louna may be a big dreamer but she is also very determined. You will discover this as you read and learn more about Louna's dreams of her future.
Studies have shown that children who have their own books and are read to by their families get off to a flying start as learners. The distribution of these books will ensure that all Kindergarten children have at least one book of their own, will add to or begin the child's home library and will encourage children and their families to read together.
If your child has received a copy of A Mountain Alphabet or Je suis Louna please take the time to read it with your child and talk about the story and the illustrations. Give your child the gift of reading and have fun spending time together.

A letter to parents [18 KB PDF] accompanied the Kindergarten book: A Mountain Alphabet. Schools are asked to print copies of the translated letters for parents whose first language is not English.
