Overview

Within a broader unit on Aboriginal culture, students undertook an inquiry into the question: What significant contributions have Aboriginal people made to Canadian culture? In preparation for their inquiry, they reviewed concepts of culture and researched related topics (e.g., "Aboriginal relationships with the land," "the effects of contact between Aboriginal people and European explorers"). The unit took place over six to eight weeks. Evaluation was based on:

Planning for Assessment and Evaluation

Culture

Aboriginal Relationship with the Land

  • The teacher used a map overlay (transparency) to show where Aboriginal people traditionally lived in Canada. Students examined maps and other resources to discuss reasons for the settlement patterns.
  • To introduce the importance of interactions with the environment, the teacher showed the video The Strength of the River. Students discussed the importance of the river to the Aboriginal people in the area and considered how it affected their culture and helped to meet their basic needs. Students also discussed how interaction with the environment changed over time.
  • In groups, students reviewed the map overlay of Aboriginal settlement. Each group chose a specific environment (e.g., Arctic, plains, west coast, BC interior, Maritimes, Great Lakes) to research and present to the class. They constructed dioramas depicting Aboriginal interactions with the environment and reported on:
  • After listening to each presentation, students in the audience recorded three key ideas in their notebooks. Individual students also created "A day in the life" profiles of an adult or child in the chosen environment.
