Science and Technology IRP

INTRODUCTION

Preface: Using this Integrated Resource Package

Implementation of the updated Science and Technology 11 curriculum will begin in September 1995. This Integrated Resource Package (IRP) provides some of the basic information that teachers will require in order to implement the Science and Technology 11 curriculum. A list of the sections of the document, along with a description of how that section can be used, follows:

The main body of the document consists of a series of integrated columns that contain the following:

The Provincially Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Science and Technology 11

The learning outcome statements are the content standards for the provincial curriculum. They set out the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for the course. The learning outcomes are statements of what students are expected to know and do in Science and Technology 11; they also comprise the prescribed curriculum. Learning outcomes are clearly stated, expressed in measurable terms, and complete the stem, "It is expected that students will ..." Outcome statements have been written to enable teachers to use their experience and professional judgement in planning and evaluating. The outcomes are standards that will be useful to teachers for establishing benchmarks for criterion-referenced assessment of student performance. It is expected that student performance will vary in relation to outcomes. Evaluation, reporting, and student placement with respect to these outcomes is dependent on the professional judgment of teachers, guided by provincial policy.

Suggested Instructional Strategies

Instruction involves the selection of techniques, activities, and methods that can be used to meet diverse student needs and deliver the prescribed curriculum. Teachers are free to adapt and use the suggested instructional strategies or substitute others that they feel will enable their students to achieve the prescribed outcomes. These strategies have been developed by specialist and generalist teachers to assist their colleagues; they are suggestions only. Many of the suggestions in this column have been derived from previous modules and the Instructional Resources Manual for the curriculum. The modules and the manual contain much useful support for this curriculum.

Suggested Assessment Strategies

The assessment strategies consist of a variety of ideas and methods to gather evidence of student performance. Some assessment strategies relate to specific activities; others are general and could apply to any activity. These strategies have also been developed by specialist and generalist teachers to assist their colleagues; they are suggestions only.

Provincially Recommended Learning Resources

A new round of resource evaluations for this curriculum is not scheduled to take place during the 1995-96 school year. However, several new resources have recently been developed or identified to support the distance learning delivery of this curriculum. Those resources, as well as applicable resources already recommended from other subject reviews have been included in this IRP for your information. Many provincially recommended resources are available for other Science curricula. Subject to the judgement and discretion of the teacher, any provincially Recommended or Authorized learning resource may be used to support learning in any provincial curriculum.
