Science and Technology 11 provides students with opportunities to investigate, analyse, understand, and experience the relationships among science, technology, and human society.
Through their study of science and technology, students gain knowledge, develop critical and responsive attitudes toward innovation, and apply tools, processes, and strategies in response to emerging issues. Rapid technological change has had a significant impact on society, the environment, and the economy. Science and Technology 11 gives students opportunities to recognize and consider the evolution of scientific discovery, technological change, and human understanding over time and in the context of many individual and societal factors.
As they are helped to become educated citizens, students are challenged to develop a conscious awareness of their personal values and decisions, and the need for responsible actions in terms of science and technology. The course emphasizes the development of critical-thinking skills in the exploration and formation of personal ethics. These skills include the ability to use inclusive thinking; select relevant information; evaluate the dependability, validity, and biases of sources and information; clarify personal values; make judgments and defend them; choose among alternatives or generate new options; and act on and take responsibility for decisions. These essential skills help students address the challenges of uncertainty, ambiguity, and choice that accompany the social and environmental consequences of any course of action, no matter how much information is available. By taking positions following critical thought, students will develop the potential to take action to improve the quality of both their own lives and life on our planet.
To become informed and innovative adults, students need to participate in the processes of science and technology. This course invites them to explore scientific processes and technological solutions, and to learn and apply skills in using the tools and processes of science and technology in innovative ways.
