IntroductionIn addition to specifying the prescribed learning outcomes for Personal Planning in the Primary years, this Integrated Resource Package identifies provincially recommended resources related to Personal Planning. The remaining components are intended to update or supplement many of the related materials contained in the Primary Program Foundation Document, 1990 and the Primary Program Resource Document, 1990 (under revision).
The Personal Planning K to 7 curriculum makes a unique contribution to the development of students as well-rounded individuals. It complements the rest of the K to 7 curriculum by focussing on students personal development and on how their schooling and extra-curricular activities relate to their future plans.
Including Personal Planning in the K to 7 curriculum is recognition that emotional and social development are as important as academic achievement and intellectual and physical skills. This inclusion also recognizes students need to understand the personal relevance of their studies.
The curriculum for Personal Planning K to 7 has been designed to support teachers in providing students with learning opportunities that are relevant and experiential. These opportunities can help students to become thoughtful, caring individuals who plan and review, make informed choices, and begin to take responsibility for shaping their personal futures.
In Personal Planning K to 7 students are encouraged to show initiative and accountability in decision making and to develop planning skills such as time management, self-assessment, goal setting, and seeking support. These skills apply to their work in other subject areas and to the activities they will undertake following graduation.
Personal Planning K to 7 is designed to help students maintain, reinforce, and develop skills, attitudes, and behaviours that can enhance their personal well-being throughout their lives and prepare them to deal with a world of complex, ongoing change.
