Planning for Assessment

Defining the Criteria

The teacher reviewed with students the prescribed learning outcomes for these activities and explained the requirements of each task. The teacher and students decided that the following key criteria should be demonstrated in the assigned tasks.

Wilderness Safety Project

Projection Reflect Sheets

Ski Hill Poster

Assessing and Evaluating Student Performance

The teacher used the following rating scales to assess student performance. Students participated through self-assessment.

Wilderness Safety Project

Rating Criteria
4 The project shows a thorough and complete awareness of the potential hazards in the wilderness. The checklist is clear and concise. The project fully describes injuries that might occur for each hazard identified and the unsafe actions that could increase risk. The plan is reasonable and could easily be implemented. The presentation is age-appropriate, clear, and highly engaging.
3 The project shows an awareness of the potential hazards in the wilderness and identifies most key elements. The checklist is clear and concise. The project describes injuries that might occur for each the hazards identified and the unsafe actions that could increase risk. The plan is reasonable and shows that most points were taken into consideration. The presentation is age-appropriate, clear, and engaging.
2 The project shows an awareness of the potential hazards in the wilderness and identifies some key elements. The checklist contains most of the key elements. The project describes some of the injuries that might occur for some the hazards identified; also suggests some unsafe actions that could increase risk. Most of the plan is reasonable and shows that most points were considered. The presentation is limited in its appeal to the intended audience.
1 The project shows a limited or no awareness of the potential hazards in the wilderness. The checklist is unclear or missing. The project describes few or no injuries that might occur; there is limited or no awareness of unsafe actions that could increase risk. Some of the plan is reasonable, and only some points were considered. There is little or no evidence that the student understands the concepts of age-appropriateness or how to engage an audience.
