Personal Development (Safety and Injury Prevention)

Discuss the importance of following family safety rules related to pick-up and drop-off at school and visiting friends after school.
Describe a scenario that could result in injury to a student. Then have small groups of students discuss how they would deal with the situation to help prevent the injury.
Have students make posters that show children participating safely in a number of activities (e.g., using equipment such as scissors, balls, and bats).
Provide students with picture cards of various school, home, and community scenarios. Ask students to identify hazards in the pictures.
Take students on a walk around the school and neighbourhood to identify hazards and safe ways of avoiding or dealing with them (e.g., getting help from Block Parents or school crossing guards). As follow-up, have children create a map to show what they have learned.
Distribute picture cards portraying children seeking assistance in a variety of scenarios (e.g., lost at the mall, wanting a glass of water, looking for a lost dog). Have students place the pictures in either a Yes or No box according to whether these are appropriate uses of Block Parents, fire, ambulance, or police.
List reasons for calling 911. Have students use a model telephone to practise communicating the necessary information. Include practise in low-light situations.

After students have created their maps of the neighbourhood, look for evidence that they have identified hazards. Then engage students in a discussion about safe behaviours and available emergency services. Note the accuracy and appropriateness of student responses.
