SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Ask students to bring in pictures of or packaging from household substances that are hazardous. Supplement the class collection if necessary. Discuss each product and why it is hazardous. Have students suggest safe places to store the various substances.
• Introduce students to the universal warning symbols for unsafe products (e.g., corrosive, flammable, poisonous, explosive).
• Have students create personally meaningful identification labels for hazardous products and then ask their families to place these on the hazardous products they have at home.
• Discuss the dangers of storing unsafe household products in other containers (e.g., pop bottles).
• Lead a class discussion about the steps to take in refusing unknown substances in a variety of situations.
• Have students role-play or use puppets to dramatize situations in which a young person encounters an unknown substance and responds appropriately.
• Introduce the decision-making model "look, think, decide." Have students practise this model while role-playing the refusal of unknown substances. Then chart students’ responses into two categories:

• Ways to Say No (e.g., "No," "No thank you," "No, I don’t know you," "I’m not allowed," "I don’t want to")
• Ways Not to Say No (e.g., hitting, spitting, name-calling)

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• During class discussions about safe and unsafe substances, observe the extent to which students can:

• distinguish between safe and unsafe substances
• identify unsafe substances
• provide reasons why given substances are unsafe
• describe symbols used to label hazardous products
• suggest safety practices for storing potentially unsafe materials

• When students role-play situations to demonstrate the refusal of unknown substances, note the extent to which they use:

• assertive body language
• appropriate verbal responses
