SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

Note: See the information in the Introduction regarding parental involvement and sensitive content.

  • Have students look through picture books to find illustrations of various human and animal family groupings (e.g., nuclear families, extended families; whale pod, lion pride, walrus colony).
  • Read stories to students about human and animal families. Draw students’ attention to family groupings.
  • Ask students to draw pictures of families. Then, as a class, compare various family groupings and discuss similarities and differences.
  • Lead a class discussion to establish correct language for naming parts of the body. Alternatively, invite a qualified guest speaker to lead a discussion about characteristics that distinguish males from females.
  • Ask students to bring a variety of seeds to the class and explain what plants will be produced. Students can then plant and care for their seeds.
  • Take the class on a field trip to a farm, pet store, zoo, or park to see baby animals.
