SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Invite students to describe their interests and abilities. They might make class and individual pictographs showing likes and dislikes (e.g., favourite colours, games, activities, books).
• Have students record information about themselves (e.g., in a "Me" unit) and add to it each time they have new information.
• Ask each student to supply a personal photo or drawing. Each student can then put the picture on a poster and surround it with words or other pictures that describe his or her unique qualities.
• Take the class on a tour to identify the many jobs performed in the school. Students can watch people as they work and ask questions about their jobs. Have students draw, write, or share orally what they have learned. Extend by having them identify things they can do to help make these jobs easier.
• Make a class collage, bulletin board, or scrapbook of pictures illustrating roles within the school. Make sure students include volunteers as well as individuals who are paid.
• Set up a Drama Centre with costumes and props related to a variety of occupations. Provide opportunities for students to engage in exploration and play using the centre. Students might role-play jobs and have others guess what they are.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Ask students to draw pictures of themselves to match the following captions:

• This is me helping a friend with his or her school work.
• This is me tidying up.
• This is me when I did –––––––––––––– well.
• This is me doing one of my favourite things.
• This is something I’m very good at.

• Collect students’ illustrations and conference with each student to discuss them. Note the extent to which they are able to:

• accurately describe themselves
• use appropriate language to describe things they are good at and enjoy doing

• When students are engaged in activities related to job and volunteer situations, ask questions such as:

• What are some jobs within the school?
• What is a volunteer?
• Who are some of the volunteers in the school?
• What can you do to volunteer around the school?

• When students role-play jobs, look for evidence that they:

• can identify jobs associated with certain costumes and props
• understand that a variety of jobs are available
• can identify which jobs take place within the school
• can identify school volunteers
