SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Before taking field trips, list potential hazards students may encounter and discuss appropriate safety behaviour (e.g., identifying emergency exits, remaining seated while the bus is moving). Have students suggest the possible consequences for themselves and others of failing to follow safety procedures.
• Invite guest speakers to discuss the consequences of unsafe behaviour. Possibilities include:

• Search and Rescue personnel
• medical personnel (emergency room, rehabilitation)
• individuals who have sustained injury because of unsafe or irresponsible risk-taking behaviour
• paramedics, firefighters, police

• Invite a guest speaker to discuss and demonstrate basic first aid. Have the guest facilitate a discussion on the variety of applications of first-aid skills (e.g., in wilderness situations, on the water).
• Have students generate a list of skills needed to deal with potentially hazardous situations that may occur when baby-sitting, cooking, or using motorized equipment. Then have students create a safety video for one of these situations.
• Brainstorm recreational activities that involve some risk of injury. Using a "think, pair, share" strategy, have students examine how ability, training, and other factors (e.g., physical strength and conditioning, familiarity with equipment, weather conditions, consumption of alcohol and drugs) relate to injury prevention.
• Use current newspaper articles to generate student discussion related to responsible decision making (e.g., a boy who used CPR to save his father’s life after a heart attack, a girl who called 911 and used basic first aid to rescue a victim). News items may also be used to depict individuals who may not have used good decision-making skills when faced with an unsafe situation, or who created an unsafe situation because of their conduct.
