SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Have students work individually or in groups to collect a portfolio of TV, newspaper, and magazine advertisements depicting irresponsible risk-taking behaviour. Have students present their portfolios, stating why these behaviours are examples of irresponsible risk taking. As an extension, have student write letters to the advertisers, stating why they think their campaigns are irresponsible.
• Have groups of students act out scenarios presented on situation cards where peer pressure is used to encourage an individual’s participation in an activity. Students should demonstrate assertiveness and other appropriate responses to peer pressure when acting out the scenarios. Have them state their boundaries, identify options, and distinguish between aggressive, assertive, and passive responses.
• Read a statement such as the following to the class: "Peer pressure contributes to risk taking." Have students line up in a continuum according to how strongly they agree or disagree with the statement. Students can then form groups to discuss their positions. Encourage them to consider additional factors contributing to risk taking (e.g., being late, hunger, fear, lack of concentration). Bring the groups back together to discuss.
• Invite qualified personnel to introduce students to basic first-aid skills. As part of the presentation, have the guest describe a variety of personal and career contexts where first-aid skills are valuable.
• Give more than one group the same scenario and have students discuss how different people might approach the same emergency procedure in different ways and still achieve the same results.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Assess and respond to students’ discussions and written statements about the portrayal of irresponsible risk-taking behaviours in advertising. Consider the extent to which they:

• clearly describe the approach taken by each advertisement
• identify similarities and differences in visual images, choices of spokespersons, descriptive language, and tones
• speculate about how advertising influences general orientations or positions about irresponsible risk taking

• To assess students’ abilities to identify basic first-aid skills, have them complete a multiple choice exercise in which they identify the most appropriate action for a number of injuries, such as bruises, scrapes, cuts, and burns.
