SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Have students present scenarios on how to act with empathy in various classroom and school situations. Situations might involve loss, pain, grief, loneliness, or anger. Then have students discuss how relationships can be strengthened by empathetic behaviours.
• Have pairs of students select from media or literature one example of a supportive relationship and one example of a non-supportive relationship. Ask students to list the characteristics of each relationship. Each pair’s findings can be incorporated into an overall class list.
• Have small groups each create a portrayal of one supportive and one non-supportive relationship (e.g., using stories, songs, cartoons, or drama). Provide an opportunity for groups to present their work to each other. Ask students to suggest what changes would be required to make the non-supportive relationships into supportive relationships.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• After students have presented and discussed scenarios on how to act with empathy, ask them to describe in their journals how such behaviours contribute to supportive relationships. Look for evidence that students:
  • understand how others are feeling
  • recognize empathetic behaviours
  • relate how empathetic behaviours can build positive relationships

• As the class develops a list of characteristics for determining supportive relationships, ensure that they include items such as:

• using appropriate language and gestures
• showing sensitivity to others’ feelings
• supporting others in their goals and plans
• respecting other viewpoints
• listening actively
• showing caring behaviours

Have students use this list as they critique one another’s portrayals of supportive and non-supportive relationships.
