SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Have students identify recent successes and the skills and attributes required to achieve them. Then have them review previously developed inventories of personal skills, attributes, and achievements to incorporate new information.
• Challenge students to write commercials about themselves, identifying their attributes, skills, and successes.
• Ask students to keep journals in which they compare employability with skills they are acquiring in school and in extra-curricular activities.
• Have students practise employability skills in jobs around the school (e.g., extra-curricular activities, classroom duties). Ask them to record these skills in personal portfolios.
• Involve students in peer activities that promote the development of teamwork skills that are transferable to the workplace.
• As a class, brainstorm recreational activities. Then have students work in groups to select one activity and identify the transferable skills associated with that activity. Use a carousel approach to have groups share their findings.
• Ask each student to complete a character trait analysis of a celebrity of their choice (e.g., professional athlete, actor, politician, community leader).
• Have students select an adult character from recent literature and identify the skills that character uses in her or his job. Students can then create a job advertisement for that character’s job. Students might also use the National Occupational Classification matrix to identify additional information about the job.
• Ask students to use "Know, Wonder, Learn" charts to document a range of career opportunities, including non-traditional roles. Students could use the Internet to gather information on a variety of career opportunities locally, nationally, and globally.
• Have students make web charts to illustrate connections among local, regional, and global career opportunities.
• Encourage students involved in mentorship programs to share and explore their career goals and plans with their mentors.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• When students work on group activities, have them identify two strengths they personally exhibited while working with others and one goal to work toward in the next group activity. Ask them to suggest how these skills can be transferred to the workplace.
• In preparation for student-led conferences, ask students to make notes in their portfolios that describe:

• qualities they like about at least two samples of their work
• skills they have developed through school activities
• skills they have developed through recreational or cultural activities
