SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

  • Invite guest speakers (e.g., from ICBC, Red Cross, WCB, Search and Rescue) to discuss the potential for injury and how to minimize hazards. Follow up by having students create cartoons or stories about an individual working to minimize hazards in a specific situation.
  • Help students identify existing and potential hazards in the community. Have them write mock letters to the appropriate authorities (e.g., town council, road maintenance, utility companies) to report hazards and recommend solutions.
  • As a class, brainstorm and discuss potential hazards in the home (e.g., food contamination, exposed electrical wiring, slippery bathtub). Have students use a checklist to assess their own homes for potential hazards and to classify these hazards as to whether or not they require immediate attention. Encourage them to share their findings with their families.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

  • Collect students’ cartoons and stories and look for evidence that they have:
  • identified the potential hazard
  • described possible injuries
  • planned to avoid, minimize, or remove the hazard
  • In students’ letters to an authority about a hazard, check for:
  • the ability to identify the hazard
  • the ability to propose a reasonable solution
  • choice of the appropriate authority
  • clear and respectful language
