PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES

It is expected that students will:

describe the possible effects of substance abuse on individuals and families
identify factors that contribute to use, misuse, and abuse of substances
identify sources of support and information related to substance abuse prevention

SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

Have small groups of students create reports on the effects of using or abusing a specific substance or group of substances. They might organize their reports into sections: Effects on Me, Effects on My Family, Effects on Others, and Effects on the Community.
Ask students to collect advertisements for tobacco and alcohol. Conduct a class analysis of these to identify how the advertisements contribute to the use of these substances. Then compare the pictures promoting tobacco or alcohol with pictures of individuals who suffer from tobacco- or alcohol-related diseases. Students can then create advertisements that communicate the negative effects of tobacco and alcohol. The advertisements can be posted around the school.
Use print or video case studies to help students become aware of the indicators of substance abuse and the factors that increase the likelihood of involvement in substance abuse.
Invite a community speaker (e.g., police officer, health or family services professional) to present information about health consequences associated with substance abuse, factors that contribute to substance abuse, or laws and support resources available in the community to address problems related to substance abuse.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
