SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• With student input, list procedures and rules for safety in the classroom, school, and community. Discuss why these procedures and rules are important.
• Ask students to make a map of the school that includes escape routes and to list procedures for a fire or earthquake. Practise fire and earthquake drills frequently and discuss the reasons why these precautions are important.
• Ask students to create a directory of emergency phone numbers for their community, such as poison control, electrical emergency, forest fire, marine emergency, Child Help Line. Encourage them to post their directories near their telephones at home.
• During Fire Prevention Week, invite speakers from the local fire department to the class or go on a field trip to a fire station. Have students draw maps of their homes and plan their escape routes with their families.
• Hold class discussions about news items that portray accidents. Have small groups of students answer questions such as the following: Was the accident preventable? What guidelines or rules should have been followed to prevent this from happening?
• Plan a Safety Awareness Week in the school. Have students make advertisements, cartoons, skits, posters, safety announcements, puppet shows, or musical presentations that deal with students acting in safe ways in a variety of environments and situations.
• Challenge students to work in groups to design a "Safety" game that includes accident scenarios. The game should present choices of appropriate and inappropriate responses. Groups can then exchange their games.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Following activities related to emergencies such as earthquakes and fires, look for evidence of students’ abilities to:

• explain why safety precautions (e.g., drills and rules) are necessary
• describe and demonstrate safety procedures in the classroom, on the playground, and in other areas of the school and community

• Before students engage in activities related to Safety Awareness Week in the school, emphasize that assessment will be based on their understanding of safety guidelines. Work with students to develop criteria for their projects such as:

• deals with an important safety issue
• conveys accurate information
• communicates a clear message
• includes sufficient, relevant details
