SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Use a chart to record students’ ideas on the possible physical, emotional, and social effects of inappropriate substance use on self and others.
• Give students a list or pictures of substances, and challenge students to decide whether consumption of each substance is safe or unsafe. Include some ambiguous substances such as cough syrup, ASA, or vitamins. During debriefing, point out that some substances are safe to consume when taken as directed but can become unsafe if misused. Emphasize the importance of reading directions. Discuss the potential consequences of misuse of the various substances.
• Provide students working in groups of three with scenarios involving peer pressure and substance use. For each scenario, have them develop at least one action strategy. Then have each group present a role play to demonstrate effective skills in responding to peer pressure.
• Have students create posters, cartoon strips, or advertisements in which celebrities refuse various substances.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Work with students to set criteria for their charts on the effects of substance abuse. Criteria might include:

• represents at least 5 substances
• describes the effects on self for each substance
• describes the effects on others for each substance
• provides accurate and complete information

• After each group presents a role play about peer pressure and substance abuse, have other students provide feedback. Ask them to consider whether the group:

• portrayed effective action strategies in response to peer pressure
• demonstrated realistic and appropriate behaviours
• referred to possible negative effects of substance use
