PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES

It is expected that students will:

apply safety guidelines to protect themselves and others from exploitation and abuse
recognize various types of abuse, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect

SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

Have small groups of students role-play a solution to an exploitative or abusive situation. These situations may involve bullying by peers or potential exploitation by adults. Remind them to demonstrate preventive, avoidance and assertiveness behaviours (e.g., travel with a buddy, walk with purpose and confidence, use strong body language to say no assertively).
Use videos and other resources to present information on dealing with exploitative or potentially abusive situations. Ask previewing questions to focus students’ attention and follow up by having them summarize what they have learned. Encourage students to reflect on their own behaviour: Have they ever used putdowns, threats, or force against others? Could that have been a form of abuse?
Present the class with definitions and examples of:

physical abuse—any intentional use of physical force or action that causes or could cause injury

emotional abuse—a pattern of putdown behaviour or verbal attacks, including belittling, demeaning, rejecting, terrorizing, isolating, or exploiting

sexual abuse—use of a child or non-consenting adult for sexual gratification (includes touching)

neglect—failure to provide for a child’s basic needs (food, clothing, adequate shelter, supervision, medical care)

Have students suggest effective strategies for protecting themselves and others from each type of abuse (including telling someone).

Have students identify instances of abuse reported in the media. Then have them classify these examples in terms of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or neglect.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

When students role-play a solution to an exploitative or abusive situation, note the extent to which they:

make an accurate assessment of the potential danger of the situation

demonstrate appropriate preventive or avoidance behaviours

demonstrate assertiveness through appropriate body language and speech

include details that show their level of understanding
