SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Invite students to create descriptive or reflective writing, artwork, songs, dramatizations, and so on to represent their interests, strengths, or abilities. Students could ask for classmates’ perceptions of their attributes.
• Have students create profiles describing the distinctive qualities of characters in literature or in the news. In a whole-class setting, discuss several different character profiles to develop an awareness of diversity.
• Create a Class Tree, with each student supplying a leaf representing their personal strengths and attributes. Display the tree for the school or at a parents’ night.
• As students engage in classroom study, draw attention to particular behaviours that are conducive to effective concentration (e.g., beginning with easier tasks, organizing work space, note-taking, using memory aids or reference tools, making a work schedule, approaching tasks with a clear set of priorities, minimizing noise and other distractions).
• Have students use daily planners to track their homework assignments.
• Brainstorm and discuss volunteer roles for children in the home, at school, or in the community.
• Encourage students to identify a "job" that someone has done for them without being paid. Then have them identify situations when their parents paid someone to do a job or were hired to do a job. Conclude by conducting a discussion on society’s need for:

• unpaid work (e.g., homemaking, volunteer activity)
• paid work (e.g., paid work enables people to support themselves and their families, attracts skilled people to do things that need to be done, provides a tax base)

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• As students analyse and reflect on their own and others’ work, look for evidence that they:

• include all members of the class when they communicate
• appreciate individual attributes and skills
• respect diversity in the classroom
• celebrate other students’ successes

• Have students assess how well they use their daily planners to track their homework. Ask them to note how often they record their homework and how often they refer to their planners.
• Have students work in small groups to interview adults and then prepare lists of paid and unpaid work. Have them identify and summarize how the work contributes to the well-being of individuals and the community. Assess their summaries using criteria such as:

• information shows insight and accuracy
• paid and unpaid situations have been adequately considered
• shows logical connections between work and benefits to society

• In preparation for student-led conferences, invite students to prepare a portfolio by collecting:

• examples of the skills they have recently developed
• descriptions of their attributes
• a summary of their strengths
• a strategy for effective study
