SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Chart a goal-setting model that includes goal selection, action steps to achievement, a timeline, opportunities to monitor and reflect on progress, and celebrating success. Have students use the model to establish and pursue weekly goals by preparing daily plans directed toward achieving weekly goals. At the end of the week, have them assess and evaluate their progress.
• Encourage students to use ongoing self-assessment to determine short-term goals for upcoming school assignments.
• Involve students in three-way conferences (teacher and students with peers or parents) in which they describe their achievements.
• Post a chart showing a problem-solving model such as the following:

1. identify the problem
2. decide who "owns" the problem
3. identify possible solutions
4. consider consequences of each solution
5. choose one solution
6. act on this choice
7. reflect

• Have students prepare a list of problems they can solve themselves and those they can solve only with the help of others.
• Encourage students to work collaboratively with their families to use a problem-solving model to propose a solution to an assigned problem (e.g., bullying on the playground, littering in the neighbourhood).

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Have students review their progress in achieving their weekly goals. Ask them to describe:

• accomplishments that make them feel proud
• activities they tried hard to do well, but presented difficulties
• goals that need adjustment or a new action plan

• After students and families have worked together to propose a solution to a problem, ask students to reflect on the process involved. Ask if they used a problem-solving model, and have them identify the steps followed to arrive at the solution.
