SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• Use videos or invite guest speakers to discuss fire, water, and traffic hazards as well as accident prevention.
• Have the class brainstorm activities or situations that require protective equipment or procedures (e.g., seat belts, skating pads, potholders, earplugs).
• Establish a routine of having students give a daily report of the safety practices they engaged in (e.g., wearing helmets, using crosswalk). Graph students’ practices. Have students set class goals to improve their safety practices. Review monthly.
• Set up a carousel with pictures or descriptions of potentially hazardous sites (e.g., creek, ravine, construction site, train tracks). Have students in groups move through the carousel, listing possible hazards associated with each site and measures for accident prevention.
• Arrange field trips to various community safety organizations such as fire, police, and ambulance. After, have students create posters or newspaper advertisements promoting safety support systems in the community.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Before the guest speaker’s presentation, ask students to think about the importance of safety. Have students brainstorm questions they would like to ask the visitor. To summarize what students learned from the presentation, ask questions such as:

• What are some unsafe situations involving fire, water, and traffic?
• What should you do to keep safe when riding your bike, crossing the street, riding in a boat or car, or swimming?
• What are some of the school’s safety drills?
• What safety rules do you practise at home?

Note students’ knowledge and understanding.

• Show pictures of potentially hazardous situations. Challenge students to identify the hazards and any possible preventive measures. Note the extent to which students are able to:

• identify what might make a situation dangerous
• describe how safety precautions prevent unnecessary accidents or injuries
• provide some good solutions or alternatives when faced with unsafe situations
• identify protective equipment that could prevent serious injury
