SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

• As a class, brainstorm a list of substances that are potentially dangerous (e.g., ammonia, tobacco, vanilla). Then have students work in pairs to prepare pamphlets, advertisements, or cartoons about the potential effects of misuse.
• Ask students to create posters advocating awareness of hazardous substances and safe responses (e.g., "Be safe. If you do not know, do not touch; do not smell; do not taste"). Display students’ posters around the school.
• Have students match product warning symbols and their meanings. Then have them ask an adult to help them identify products at home that have these warning labels.
• Identify prescription and non-prescription medicines and rules for their use and storage.
• Ask students to give suggestions for completing scenarios such as "Someone you don’t know well asks you to –––––––––––––– " (e.g., drink an open can of pop, eat a candy, puff a cigarette). Discuss possible avoidance and assertiveness skills in response to each scenario.

SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

• Give students illustrations of a number of unsafe substances. Ask them to draw pictures to show the dangers associated with each substance. Collect their illustrations and check to see if they have made accurate associations.
• Have students role-play situations to demonstrate what they have learned about refusing unknown substances. Note the extent to which they:
