SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
- Have students brainstorm activities that family members of all ages do or things they take responsibility for within the family (e.g., housework, errands, shopping, making money, recreational activities). Ask students to describe the things that they already do and things they could do to help their families.
- Read stories to students about families that demonstrate caring and nurturing behaviours. Follow up with class discussions about how students themselves can be caring toward other family members.
- Create a book display with books about caring, or have students develop theme books to explore the topic.
- Maintain a "Catch Them Caring" list on which students and staff record thoughtful, caring behaviours of others. Randomly select names from the list and feature the individual in daily announcements or on a "Caring Student of the Week" bulletin board.
- Have students grow seeds or keep pets in the classroom. Give each student a chance to be caregiver (including during weekends and holidays).
- Ask students to collect or draw pictures of baby animals and identify whether they were born live or hatched from an egg.
- Invite a breeder to speak to the class about animal reproduction.
- offer suggestions for participation in family decision making
- propose ways to contribute to a safe and healthy home
- describe how to show support for family activities
- identify ways to show caring within families
