Prescribed Learning Outcomes
It is expected that students will:
- identify the stages of growth and development, including infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age
- demonstrate an awareness of how growth and development at each stage of life can be nurtured
- propose ways to provide care giving and nurturing for others
- demonstrate behaviours that contribute to a safe environment for themselves and others

Suggested Instructional Strategies
- Facilitate a class discussion on stages of growth and development (including infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, old age). Have students create posters illustrating some foods and textile items that might be associated with each stage.
- Create a chart with the headings Characteristics, How to Nurture, and Safety Issues. Ask students to brainstorm suggestions to fill in the chart for each of the stages of human development. Set up a panel of people who provide care for individuals at various stages of human development (e.g., early childhood educator, elementary-school teacher, community youth worker, workplace counsellor, seniors' home attendant). Have students ask panel members questions related to the specific needs of individuals at each stage of development. Following the panel session, students can revisit the chart and revise it as necessary.
- Have students role-play various care-giving strategies for each stage of human development.
- Instruct each student to create a scrapbook entitled "I Am My Own Best Friend" to identify and reflect on self-care activities.
- Designate a different student each week to be a safety monitor who observes and reports on the safety of activities in the foods or textiles lab. Ask each monitor to offer suggestions for improvement, as appropriate.
Suggested Assessment Strategies
- Before students develop posters to show food and textile items associated with each stage of human development, work with them to develop criteria such as:
- information about each stage is accurate and relevant
- material is effectively organized according to stages of growth and development
- presentation focusses on key aspects of the various stages
- Assess the "I Am My Own Best Friend" scrapbooks that students create in terms of:
- awareness of students' own stage of growth and development (adolescence)
- knowledge about self-care and nurturing
- behaviours that contribute to a safe environment for themselves
- care and nurturing of others
- After students have learned about nurturing and safety behaviours associated with each stage of development, divide the class into groups. Assign one stage to each group and have the groups present the information they learned through role plays or stories. Beforehand, work with the class to develop criteria and a rating scale for self- and peer assessment. Criteria might include:
- situation is realistic
- key features focus on the appropriate developmental stage
- nurturing behaviour is appropriate
- includes one or more safety issues
- offers a conclusion or an insight about how growth and development can be nurtured
