Suggested Instructional Strategies
As students explore design in textiles, they develop an appreciation of the potential for creative expression in this medium. They also gain an understanding of the technical skills required to produce textiles for use in the home and in industry.
- Have students use computers, print material, or videos to familiarize themselves with the principles and elements of art and design. Ask them to produce scrapbooks or posters illustrating the use of each principle and element in garment and interior design.
- Lead a class discussion about using the principles and elements of design to enhance body shape. While students produce their own garments, have them identify how they used design principles and elements to complement their own body shapes.
- Plan a field trip to a fabric, clothing, or furniture store to examine window and floor displays. Ask students to describe the textiles displayed and to indicate how these items reflect the principles and elements of design.
- Ask students to examine several fabric samples and assess their aesthetic value and potential uses. Have them explain the relationship between aesthetics and function.
- Invite students in groups to create games (e.g., quiz shows, crossword puzzles, board games) to show the correct use of textile terminology. Ask students to share the games with their classmates.
- Demonstrate time-saving techniques using a serger. Ask students to use both the serger and the sewing machine to create a variety of samples. Have them compare the two methods using various criteria (e.g., time spent, finished appearance, degree of difficulty).
- As a class, brainstorm time-saving techniques and tools that maximize students' use of sewing time. Have each student demonstrate one time-saving technique or tool.
