Families in Society

It is expected that students will:

  • identify various family structures
  • analyse the relationship between societal change and the ways that families function
  • examine the role of adolescents in families in past and present societies
  • compare customs associated with adolescence in various cultures
  • identify issues facing families in a multicultural and global society
  • analyse current trends in families in Canada
  • compare customs and traditions of families in various cultures
  • describe strategies for taking action on social issues that affect families

Needs and Wants of Individuals and Families

It is expected that students will:

Grade 11Grade 12
  • examine theories of human needs as they apply to individuals and their families
  • examine factors that influence how individuals and families meet their needs and wants
  • analyse adolescent mental and physical health issues that can affect individual and family functioning
  • identify sources of positive and negative stress for adolescents
  • demonstrate appropriate stress-management techniques
  • research careers that provide services for individuals and families
  • analyse the impact of personal behaviour choices on other family members
  • evaluate community resources that help families meet their needs and wants
  • design strategies to provide for family needs in crisis situations
  • design and evaluate living spaces that meet housing needs throughout life

Human Growth and Development

It is expected that students will:

Grade 11Grade 12
  • describe the growth and development of adolescents
  • assess a variety of human growth and development theories
  • analyse influences that have an impact on growth and development during adolescence
  • analyse the services that might be used in care-giving situations for adolescents
  • identify care-giving behaviours that promote a healthy, nurturing environment
  • describe the changes in human growth and development from birth to death
  • evaluate factors that affect human growth and development
  • propose responsible action plans for caring for and nurturing self and others
  • compare and contrast a variety of parenting philosophies and practices
  • identify practices related to death, dying, and grieving in various cultures

Relationships

It is expected that student will:

Grade 11Grade 12
  • analyse a variety of communication skills and techniques
  • describe the potential effects of relationships on an individual's well-being
  • analyse social issues that affect adolescent relationships
  • explain the changing relationships individuals may experience during adolescence
  • investigate the impact of customs, laws, and political events on relationships
  • analyse the various types of relationships and their development throughout life
  • propose and evaluate strategies for dealing with relationship problems
  • analyse strategies for building, maintaining, and ending relationships

Family Resource Management

It is expected that students will:

Grade 11Grade 12
  • describe ways that individuals and families acquire resources to meet their needs and wants
  • develop strategies for managing family resources
  • identify how personal and family values relate to consumer purchases
  • analyse the relationship between marketplace practices and consumer behaviour in families
  • demonstrate an understanding of how the work done in families relates to skills needed in the workplace
  • compare and evaluate various financial practices and how they affect family resource management
  • devise resource-management strategies to address family needs and wants throughout life
  • analyse the impact of family resource-management practices on local and global communities
