Appendix I: Descriptions of Models of Content

Each of the following descriptions suggests possible contexts to fulfil the prescribed outcomes for Fine Arts 11. These models are not meant to be limiting in any way. Adapt or modify them to suit your own needs or use them as models for developing your own content for the prescribed learning outcomes.

These suggestions cover a range of possibilities. They focus on each discipline area in fine arts (dance, drama, music, and the visual arts) and also include two integrated, multi-disciplinary models.

Dance: Choreography

This dance content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on choreography. The course will involve students in activities that explore basic movement skills and choreographic techniques.

The students' experience with these activities will facilitate the creation and performance of a piece of choreography. The use of video and live dance performance is an important part of this model.

Dance: Jazz Styles

This dance content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on jazz dance styles, which will give students the opportunity to participate actively in jazz dance as well as several related dance styles. The related styles could be chosen from the following: African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, social dances of the 1940's and 1950's (e.g., lindy and jive, hip-hop, musical theatre, lyrical jazz, tap and soft-shoe.)

In addition to learning dance skills, students will examine how history and culture have affected the development of the dance styles studies and will create a short piece of choreography in one of the styles.

Professional performance, live and on video, are recommended as learning resources.

Drama: Film and Television

This drama content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on film and television. The course will actively engage students in an introductory study of film and television. The sample will involve the study of techniques used in these media today and will examine the history of these media. Activities will include critically watching and producing video and other media.

Topics might include:

Drama: Voice and Improvisation

This drama content model is based on a 50-60 hour skill-based Fine Arts 11 course focusing on voice and improvisation which will actively engage students in an introductory study of the skills of drama. The focus will be on oral communication and improvisation. Activities will include recording and listening to oral representations.

Drama: Human Relationships

This drama content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on relationships. The course uses dramatic techniques to have students actively explore a variety of human relationships.

Music: An Exploration of Music and Sound

This music content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on music exploration. The course will engage in the composition, performance, and criticism of music. A quality tape deck or compact disk player should be available for listening activities. Resources could include traditional and non-traditional musical sound sources (e.g., environmental sounds, student-made instruments, found instruments, electronic sounds) and music technology. This delivery model would explore invented and unconventional instruments, sounds sources, and music notation.

Music: Vocal Music

This music content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on vocal music. The course will engage students in vocal and choral music through listening. performing, critiquing, and creative activities. This delivery model requires students to sing with an accompaniment, as well as doing listening activities (e.g., accompanying instrument, tape deck, cd player).

Visual Arts: Studio-Based Visual Arts

This visual arts content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on studio-based visual arts. The course will actively engage students in a wide variety of activities through a studio-based study of visual arts. Students will work in at least three of the following areas: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, fibre arts, printmaking, mixed media, photography, film, video.

Visual Arts: Contemporary Issues and the Visual Arts

The visual arts content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course focusing on contemporary issues and the visual arts. The course will actively engage students in developing work through a variety of thematic approaches selected by the teacher and students. The actual media used may be limited by teacher expertise, media availability, or physical space. In addition to the contemporary issues from Fine Arts 11 (multi-disciplinary), the following topics might be used:

Multi-Disciplinary Fine Arts: History in the Making

This multi-disciplinary content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course that integrates the four fine arts disciplines. The course will engage students in a wide variety of participatory activities through a non-traditional approach to the study of the arts and their history. The experiences and resources suggested are intended to promote independent learning, active involvement, and personal creation in the four arts disciplines - dance, drama, music and the visual arts.

In this model, students will have opportunities to become familiar with significant artists and trends in the arts from the past and present, as well as from culturally diverse sources. Students will examine how the history of the arts influences contemporary work and thought.

Multi-Disciplinary Fine Arts: Contemporary Issues

This multi-disciplinary content model is based on a 50-60 hour Fine Arts 11 course that integrates the four arts disciplines. The course will actively involve students in exploring topics - selected by the teacher and students-in the four disciplines (dance, drama, music, and the visual arts). Controversial topics need to be approached carefully, with sensitivity, and with parental awareness and support. Topics might include one or more of the following:

Multi-Disciplinary Fine Arts: Self-Portrait

This example elaborates an approach to the "Multi-disciplinary: Contemporary Issues" model, and focuses on the topic of self-portrait.
