The British Columbia English Language Arts K to 12 curriculum incorporates components from the 1990 provincial English Language Arts curriculum, the contributions of groups of British Columbia educators, and much of the content and intent of the Western Consortium's Common Curriculum Framework of Outcomes for English Language Arts K to 12.
Graduation Requirements for English Language Arts K to 12
All BC students are required to take English Language Arts from Kindergarten to Grade 12. In Grade 12, either English 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12 will satisfy provincially prescribed graduation requirements.
English 12 focusses on the expressive and functional purposes of language and its uses in a wide variety of contexts. Technical and Professional Communications 12 focusses more specifically on the functional uses of language in technical and professional contexts.
A student may choose to take both courses. In this case, only one will be considered a part of Foundation Studies. The other will provide the student with Selected Studies credits. Both English 12 and Technical and Professional Communications 12 are provincially examinable. Both courses prepare students for postsecondary education and a broad range of career options.
