PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will use language to explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences to prepare for their roles in the world.
It is expected that students will:
- demonstrate confidence in their abilities to communicate effectively in a variety of school, community, and work contexts
- assess their own communication skills, interests, and attitudes in the light of personal and career plans
- develop communication goals and monitor their action plans
- demonstrate their understanding of themselves as self-directed, curious, self-appraising, and open-minded learners

SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Students increase their self-understanding when they reflect on aspects of their personal lives and take time to consider their futures and the communication skills needed in both private and public domains.
- Engage students in a discussion about the various contexts they have worked within at school, at home, and in the community. Ask them to make notes describing situations where they feel comfortable or uncomfortable. Encourage them
to reshape their ideas visually or poetically.
- As students research careers of their choice, ask them to collect information from a wide range of sources, including telecommunications networks. Suggest they find information on educational prerequisites and expenses, course requirements, employment prospects, and expected salary ranges. Have students present their information
to the class.
- Have students explore their paths to their chosen careers by evaluating their current skills, related experience, and career requirements. Then have them develop plans to close the gaps. Ask them
to explain why their career choices are appropriate for them, describe the problems they anticipate, and list related jobs they might consider.
SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
At this level, students should be expected to show increasing responsibility for analysing their
communication needs and goals, making informed choices, developing plans, and monitoring their progress. The way in which they demonstrate their growth is likely to vary substantially from one student to another. Some students may rely on written reflections and analyses; others may
demonstrate the outcomes through annotated collections, visual representations, or other media.
- When students research and analyse the role of language and communication in postsecondary study, work, and personal activities they are interested in, look for evidence that they:
- explored a variety of sources including people who are currently involved in their field of interest
- made connections between what they found out and what they know about themselves
- arrived at logical conclusions or generalizations
- Have students develop individual communication profiles that include an analysis of:
- their current skills, interests, and attitudes
- relevant experiences
- preferences among communication forms and situations (e.g., large group, small group; reading, listening, or viewing; virtual or
face-to-face; writing, visual representations, speaking, or electronic media)
- goals for improvement
- postsecondary plans
Look for evidence that they are able to be reflective, objective, analytic, realistic, and open in their
self-analysis.
