ESL
Students and Second-Language Study
Teachers of students for
whom English is a second language will need to be sensitive to the varying rates
at which these students develop communication skills. ESL students are likely
to benefit from teacher modelling of expectations, real-life applications, direct
instruction, incremental introduction of language-learning skills, frequent
review, and use of graphic organizers (key visuals). Core French teachers are
encouraged to use a wide range of appropriate adaptations to instruction and
assessment to meet the needs of individual students. When teachers provide instruction
in French, ESL students are placed on an equal footing with their classmates.
