CAPP 11 and 12Introduction

This Integrated Resource Package (IRP) sets out the provincially prescribed curriculum for Career and Personal Planning 8 to 12. The development of this IRP has been guided by the principles of learning:

  • Learning requires the active participation of the student.
  • People learn in a variety of ways and at different rates.
  • Learning is both an individual and a group process.

    Rationale

Career and Personal Planning (CAPP) 8 to 12 addresses significant aspects of the Ministry of Education's Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education Plan. Specifically, it:

Overall, CAPP 8 to 12 makes a unique contribution to the development of students as well-rounded, balanced individuals. It complements the academic and vocationally oriented courses that constitute much of the curriculum in grades 8 to 12 by focussing on students' personal development and on how their schooling and extra-curricular activities relate to their future plans and life after school.

Including CAPP 11 and 12 among the courses that are required to meet graduation requirements recognizes that emotional and social development are as important to the development of healthy and active educated citizens as are academic achievement and the development of intellectual and physical skills. The inclusion also recognizes the need for students to understand the personal relevance of their studies and acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that can help them make appropriate personal decisions and manage their lives more effectively.

The curriculum for CAPP 8 to 12 has been designed to help students prepare to deal with a world of complex, ongoing technological change, continuous challenge, expanding opportunities, and intricate social evolution. Learning opportunities that are relevant and experiential help students become thoughtful, caring individuals who plan and reflect, make informed choices, and take responsibility for their personal and career development. The curriculum encourages students to show initiative and accountability in decision making and helps them develop planning skills ranging from time management to self-assessment and from goal setting to locating and accessing sources of support and assistance. These skills apply to their work in every other subject area and to the activities they will undertake following graduation.

CAPP 8 to 12 helps students relate their learning in school to the demands of the working world and the expectations of society. It also provides opportunities for students to maintain, reinforce, and develop those skills, attitudes, and behaviours that will allow them to enhance their personal well-being throughout their lives.

    Requirements and Graduation Credits

Career and Personal Planning 8 to 12 is an extension of the Personal Planning K to 7 curriculum. The requirements of this curriculum are articulated in the prescribed learning outcomes. These include the requirement, specified in The Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education Plan, for students to:

  • develop and regularly maintain Student Learning Plans beginning in Grade 9
  • complete 30 hours of Work Experience during their Grade 11 or Grade 12 years

Students must complete CAPP 11 and CAPP 12 in order to satisfy graduation requirements. Each course is designated as a two-credit course and must be reported to the ministry as such for transcript and graduation purposes. Letter grades and percentages must be reported for each of the two courses. The Career and Personal Planning course codes are CAPP 11 and CAPP 12. It is not possible to obtain partial credit for either course. Completion of individual components of the CAPP program (e.g., the 30 hours of Work Experience or the Student Learning Plan) is not reported separately.

The reporting requirements referred to above are not intended to limit options for delivery. Schools may organize the senior secondary CAPP prescribed learning outcomes, including the 30 hours of Work Experience, during students' Grade 11 and Grade 12 years in ways that meet the needs of their students and their timetabling requirements.

    Organization of the Curriculum

The aim of Career and Personal Planning 8 to 12 is to enable students to become thoughtful, caring individuals who plan and reflect, make informed choices, and take responsibility for their own personal and career development.

The provincially prescribed learning outcomes for CAPP 8 to 12 are grouped under three broad organizers:

    Planning Process

This organizer is designed to develop students' abilities to:

Activities associated with the Planning Process organizer encourage students to develop a greater sense of direction and a willingness to examine personal alternatives. Planning Process includes learning outcomes specifically related to Student Learning Plans (SLPs, described on page 3). Students are expected to record any changes in their SLPs, which become evolving records of their thoughts and actions. The SLPs also serve as a basis for ongoing reflection and self-evaluation.

    Personal Development

Personal Development is designed to help students acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to lead healthy and productive lives. The suborganizers for this component of the curriculum are:

  • Healthy Living

to encourage students to value and adopt balanced, healthy lifestyles

  • Mental Well-Being
to develop in students an appropriate sense of personal worth, potential, and autonomy as well as a sense of their relationships with others
  • Family Life Education
to develop students' understanding of the role of the family and students' capacity for responsible decision making in their personal relationships
  • Child Abuse Prevention
to develop in students the capacity to assess, prevent, and resolve abusive situations
  • Substance Abuse Prevention
to develop in students the ability to make responsible decisions regarding substance use as they develop healthy lifestyles
  • Safety and Injury Prevention
to develop in students the ability to apply principles of safety to all aspects of their lives

All of these topics were formerly addressed by the Learning for Living Primary to Graduation Curriculum Guide (1990), which is now superseded. Some of these topics may also be addressed as part of the study of other subjects (e.g., human reproductive biology may be addressed in science).

    Career Development

This organizer addresses learning associated with career-related skills, career possibilities, and the demands of the workplace. Career Development includes learning outcomes related to Work Experience as well as to the complementary theoretical learning associated with this area. Career Development is an ongoing cycle of awareness, exploration, and preparation. Through this cycle, students integrate personal, educational, work-related, and community learning experiences to prepare for future career choices.

Career Development consists of three suborganizers:

  • Career Skills Awareness
to develop students' understanding and appreciation of personal characteristics and how these relate to potential careers
  • Career Exploration
to enable students to take advantage of community resources in order to relate their learning and skills to education, career, and personal roles in a changing world
  • Career Preparation
to practise the academic, teamwork, and personal management skills needed to succeed in the workplace

    The Student Learning Plan

As indicated in The Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education Plan, the main requirements associated with Student Learning Plans (SLPs) are as follows:

These requirements are consistent with the prescribed learning outcomes set out under the curriculum organizer Planning Process.

Elements of a Student Learning Plan
