SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
- Divide the class into small groups and give each group two or three cards describing emergency situations (e.g., boating accident, fire, earthquake). Have students assess the factors involved in each scenario and describe appropriate action for various people involved in it. Have groups share their results with the class and then, using charts, record safety principles that could be applied to these situations.
- Have each student interview someone who has been in or avoided a serious accident. As an alternative, invite someone to present such an experience to the class. Then have the class reflect on and discuss the interviews or presentation.
- Show appropriate films or videos that relate to safety with respect to various emergencies.
- Have students make collages or drawings of people responding appropriately to a variety of emergencies that might occur within their community.
- Review basic first aid with students. Have them create scenarios in which other students in the class can apply and practise their first aid skills, including CPR, with partners. Teachers who are not qualified first aid instructors should contact the Red Cross, Workers' Compensation Board, or St. John's Ambulance for assistance with these activities.
- Encourage students who have received first aid training to share their knowledge and skills during school activities requiring first aid backup (e.g., outdoor education experiences, school field trips, school dances).
SUGGESTED ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
- Have students develop emergency response plans for their homes in the event of fire, flood, or earthquake, depending on which is most relevant in the community. Note the extent to which they are able to identify correct precautionary measures, appropriate emergency preparation, and correct responses during the emergency.
- Invite students to demonstrate first aid skills (e.g., controlling bleeding, splinting broken bones, handling burns, dealing with hypothermia, performing CPR) by acting out procedures or by responding to case studies either orally or in writing. Look for evidence that students are able to:
- identify the problems accurately
- outline the appropriate first aid procedures
- perform the procedures correctly
- describe when and how to call for emergency support
- After a first aid course, ask students to comment on what they learned by completing the following sentence stems:
- Three first aid procedures that I know how to do correctly are __________.
- Something that surprised me was __________.
- A situation in which I would now feel confident providing first aid is __________.
- Something that I am still not sure about is __________.
RECOMMENDED LEARNING RESOURCES
