Frequently Asked Questions about Graduation

Q. What are the graduation requirements?
A. Graduation Requirements (Credit Based Program and Adult Graduation Diploma).

Q. What courses count?
A. Any courses numbered 11 and 12.

Q. What are provincial grade 12 level courses that qualify?
A. In addition to a Language Arts 12 and CAPP 12, a minimum of 10 credits are required at the provincial Grade 12 level. Provincial Grade 12 courses include Ministry Authorized Courses, External Credentials and Locally Developed Courses that are included in a Career Program within your school.

Q. How many provincial exams are needed?
A. All students are required to take a Language Arts 12 course (e.g. English, Communications or TPC) that includes a provincial exam.

Q. Do any grade 10 courses count?
A. No, but any courses taken in Grade 10 numbered 11 or 12 will count towards graduation requirements.

Q. What courses are Fine Arts or Applied Skills?
A. A list of courses that fulfill these requirements can be found in Chapter 3 of the Handbook of Procedures. In addition, School Districts can develop their own Locally Developed Courses that meet Fine Arts and Applied Skills requirements. Check your school's programming booklet or with your school counsellor to see which Local Courses qualify.

Q. Why do I have to take CAPP?
A. CAPP is a Foundation Studies requirement set by the Ministry of Education.

Q. Do I need a second language in Grades 9 and 10?
A. No, a second language is not a requirement after Grade 8; however, it may be an entrance requirement for some post-secondary institutions.

Q. What math level should I be in?
A. A math course is a graduation requirement at the Grade 11 level. You should consult with your math teacher or counsellor on which math course best fits with your future plans.

Q. Where can I read about Graduation Program information?
A. Chapter 3 in the Handbook of Procedures.

Q. What learning outside of school counts?
A. External Credentials (Courses)

Q. Are there pre-requisites for courses?
A. No, however, schools have the authority to make appropriate placement decisions in consultation with you, your parents/guardians and school personnel.

Q. How are letter grades determined and what do they mean?
A. In the Handbook of Procedures, Chapter 4.

Q. How do I find out about the course content (curriculum) for the subjects I will be enrolling in?
A. All course content or learning outcomes of a course are found in Appendix A of the related Integrated Resource Package (IRP).

Q. How do I know how many credits a course is worth?
A. All Ministry Authorized Courses with their associated credits are listed in Chapters 1 and 2 of Course Information. All information on Locally Developed Courses will be available in your school's programming booklet
