The 6 Response

The six essay meets all the criteria of a five; its superiority to the five essay is a result of degree, not kind. The level of insight may be particularly convincing and/or subtle or the writing exceptionally impressive. Certainly the six essay exhibits a depth of understanding and a sophisticated use of language.

462 02 - This is a superb paper - a high six. Vocabulary and syntax are very sophisticated; mechanics are virtually flawless. The content reflects subtle insight and a wide perspective on the ideas the story presents. The reader is consistently engaged and convinced by the writer’s argument.

105 03 - This high paper has a strong, clear voice. The paper’s organization reflects the writer’s clarity of thought. The thesis is clear and fully supported with apt references to the text. Syntax and diction, while not the paper’s greatest strengths, are certainly well above average.

342 29 - This is a lower level six paper. Although the syntax is occasionally awkward, the paper moves from the competence of a five to a six on the strength of its conclusion. The final paragraph cogently summarizes the central dilemma of the character.
