The 3 Response

The three response is barely adequate. While the student's treatment of the topic may not be wrong, it may be incomplete or so superficial as to seem inaccurate. While a central idea may not be clearly stated, it is present or implied and at least partially supported. Support may consist of long references to the poem which are not clearly connected to a central idea; alternatively, support may be very meager and/or replaced by repetitive statements. Organization is present, but may not directly help the flow of ideas. There are lapses in the student's control over the conventions of language.

245 09 - The analysis in this paper is superficial and lacks an organizing idea. The writer lists references rather than discussing the metaphor. Although the mechanics are weak, they demonstrate an adequate command of the language.

072 08 - This paper defines barely adequate. It lacks a central idea; however, it does make appropriate reference to the poem and demonstrates an understanding of the metaphor. Had the student developed the analysis, this paper would have received a higher grade.

012 30 - This paper is barely adequate. Its analysis is superficial and overly personal. The first half does not deal with the metaphor. In addition to limited content, the paragraph contains sentence errors. Although the analysis is limited, the specific references to the text justify a passing grade.
