English as a Second Language

Communication in its broadest sense is the goal of education, regardless of first or second language, or first or second culture; we build on already existing skills… and create a welcoming environment that supports a philosophy of valuing cultural/linguistic diversity.
(From ESL Learners with Special Needs, Ministry of Education, 1998, p.16)

English as a Second Language students are those whose primary language of the home is other than English and who may therefore require additional services in order to develop their individual potential within BC’s school system. Some students speak variations that differ from the English used in broader Canadian society and in school; they may require ESL support.
