EDUCATION MONTH PROCLAMATION

Traditionally, each spring, the Province dedicates a week for the celebration of education and learning in B.C. This year, in honour of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia and on behalf of her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second, the Lieutenant Governor has proclaimed March 2008 Education Month.

Around the world, British Columbia enjoys a well-earned reputation for excellence in education. Education Month offers British Columbia the chance to celebrate all aspects of learning and education in our Province.

For more information on Education Month, please visit the Education Month website: www.bced.gov.bc.ca/edmonth/

Education Month is just one of the many projects happening around the Province in 2008 that are dedicated to celebrating B.C.’s 150 years. For more information, please see the BC 150 Years website: www.bc150.gov.bc.ca/bc150.aspx

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING ONLINE CALENDAR

To celebrate Education Month, the Ministry of Education is putting together an innovative Celebration of Learning Online Calendar. The Online Calendar will be accessible from the Ministry of Education’s webpage shortly before and during Education Month, March 2008.

The Celebration of Learning Online Calendar will highlight education-related events taking place around the Province during Education Month. The Online Calendar will feature student art (see below) and will illustrate the array of education- and learning-related activities that take place in British Columbia.

School Principals, school districts and other education partners have now been sent invitations to submit events for consideration to the Celebration of Learning Online Calendar. Events that are featured on the Online Calendar will direct web traffic to the event host’s website. The deadline for submissions is February 8, 2008.

As well, the Celebration of Learning Online calendar will feature archival photographs and other media related to education in B.C. and will create a dynamic and commemorative snapshot of the past, present and future of education in our Province.

Readers of EdInfo will want to visit the Celebration of Learning Online Calendar often during Education Month; the ministry will be running a trivia contest based on information presented in the Online Calendar with a grand prize of a family trip to the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria. Future editions of EdInfo will present further details on this contest.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING STUDENT e-GALLERY ONLINE

K–12 students, here’s an amazing opportunity to showcase your art to your friends, the Province and the world. Submit your art for the Student e-Gallery Online and give your art the chance to get noticed!

Imagine a regular calendar: art on the top, dates and information on the bottom. Now imagine the Celebration of Learning Online Calendar with an e-Gallery featuring your art online, paired with a lively collection of links to celebratory events, programs and activities.

The deadline for submitting art to the e-Gallery is noon on February 15, 2008.

For details on how to submit your art to the Student e-Gallery Online, students should talk to their regular teacher, art teacher or principal. Submissions will be made as high-quality digital photographs of original pieces of work and require a signed parent/lawful guardian consent form.

The Student e-Gallery Online and the Celebration of Learning Online Calendar are being run in celebration of March 2008 which has been proclaimed Education Month in honour of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia (see above).

REEL VUE, STUDENT FILM PROJECT

Reel Vue is open for submissions from Grades 10–12 students. To be considered for selection, students are invited to submit an original artistic work in one of three media (visual arts, writing, and music). Submissions must be thematically linked to one of five themes relating to BC history (home, time, space, humanity, and choice). The submission deadline is February 22, 2008.

2008 marks 150 years of cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement since the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Reel Vue’s overarching B.C. history theme was chosen to complement the celebrations surrounding BC150 Years.

For each of the five historical themes, a selection committee, comprised of film industry representatives, will select the top submission in the visual arts, writing and music categories and teams of three students will then collaborate to make the films.

Unlike typical film festivals, Reel Vue doesn’t require a completed film at the outset. The 15 students selected to participate in Reel Vue will be given the opportunity to make films using state of the art equipment at the prestigious Gulf Islands Film and Television School (GIFTS). Films will be made during the week of March 30 – April 5. Once the films have been professionally produced, they will be premiered at a gala screening in Vancouver. All travel, accommodation and tuition will be paid for.

For more information including submission details, please see the website: www.reelvueonline.com.

PARENT CONGRESS 2008

The second annual Parent Congress is taking place on January 28, 2008 in Vancouver. The theme for this year’s Parent Congress is, Working Together: Parents as Partners in Education. The response to the call for applications was enormous: 115 parents were selected from the 325 applications the Ministry received.

In addition to meeting with Honourable Shirley Bond, Minister of Education, parent delegates are hearing from and having an opportunity for questions and answers with Silken Laumann, World Champion, Olympic medalist and founder of Silken’s Active Kids, and Dr. Art Hister, medical authority and media personality.

EdInfo will provide details of the Parent Congress after the event.

RURAL EDUCATION: CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS

The Rural Education Project continues to offer the Classroom Connections Project, a unique opportunity for students and teachers of remote schools to participate in an exciting series of educational programs, through the use of computer software that enables students from across the Province to simultaneously meet and learn online.

The Classroom Connections series are not courses but rather programs that are intended to complement programs provided by classroom teachers. The technology enables the students and teachers on the network to watch, listen and speak with the presenter and each other.

Two series are coming up this winter/spring: “Creating a Digital Storybook” and “Music for Primary Students.” Sessions take place in February, March and April. For more information, please see the LearnNow BC website: www.learnnowbc.gov.bc.ca/educators/Rural_Education/Classroom_Connections.aspx
