PEOPLE’S HISTORY PROJECT

Teachers, parents and students – here’s a wonderful opportunity to be a part of history: make a video or submit a written piece about an interesting person in your community for the People’s History section of the Royal BC Museum’s new exhibit: Free Spirit: Stories of You, Me and BC.

A video-making guide along with submission rules and guidelines are available on the Museum’s website. Certain entries will be selected to be part of the official physical exhibit opening on March 19 th, 2008. All entries will be part of the virtual online exhibit.


EXPLORATIONS SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM

2010 Legacies Now and The Ministry of Education are pleased to announce that the Explorations summer camp program will be available in 2008 to fund summer camps in all school districts across the province. 

BC school districts, public schools and band schools may apply for funding.

The NEW guidelines and application form are available on the 2010 Legacies Now website. The deadline for application is February 15, 2008.

Explorations camps focus on children who may not otherwise have the chance to participate in summer arts and sports programs. For example, the children may live in a remote location or encounter barriers such as a lack of resources or opportunities in the community   

Explorations Camps… 

  • Complement the school curriculum
  • Offer a wide range of opportunities in the areas of arts and/or sport/recreation
  • Help children develop new skills and increase participation in arts and/or sport/recreation activities
  • Encourage the development of partnerships between schools and the community

SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES 11 AND 12 DRAFT IRP AND RESPONSE SURVEY

A draft version of the new Sustainable Resources 11 and 12 IRP and a link to a Response Survey have been posted.

The draft contains revised material from the Resource Sciences 11 and 12 Forests, 1997 IRP and the Agriculture Curriculum Guide and Resource Book, 1993. It also contains new material for the Sustainable Resources 11 survey course addressing Agriculture, Energy, Fisheries, Forests, and Mining at grade 11 and new material for Fisheries 12 and Mining 12. It is available for public review and response.

Input from educators, students, parents, and other education partners is welcome, and should be submitted prior to February 12, 2008, using the response form provided on the Ministry of Education web site.


HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEARNING RESOURCE

Grades eight, nine and ten of the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Learning Resource were recently delivered to your school for your use. This classroom resource is an ActNow BC initiative, intended to support teachers to help students gain the knowledge and skills to support lifelong healthy habits in healthy eating and physical activity. The lesson plans meet the minimum mandated expectations of Health Career and Education grade eight and nine, as well as Planning Ten. Stay tuned for Fall of 2008, when Kindergarten to Grade seven, eleven and twelve will be released.


NEW CRIMINAL RECORD REVIEW PROCESS FOR EDUCATORS

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has informed the Ministry of Education of changes to the criminal record review process for educators in British Columbia. Attached please find a copy of the letter from Deputy Solicitor General, David Morhart to Deputy Minister of Education, Emery Dosdall, outlining these changes.

VANCOUVER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TO ATTEND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Lauren Law of the Vancouver Technical Secondary School is one of 60 international students selected by a British Council judging panel to participate in a prestigious international youth conference that runs from January 14-19, 2008, in England.

The “Road to Davos: Greenwich Forum 2008” will deal with a range of critical global issues such as climate change, cultural clashes and military conflicts.

The 16-year-old will be one of the youngest delegates at the Greenwich Conference and the only Canadian. She competed against 130 young leaders from other countries. Ms. Law is an environmental activist who has participated in two Canada-Wide Science Fairs and the Greening Cities Summit in London, England, last year.

Ms. Law is an honours Grade 11 student attending Vancouver Technical Secondary School. Her studies on the human impact on trees and plants led her to participate in two national science fairs in 2006 and 2007. She won the gold medal at the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair.

Recently, she began an environmental club at her school called “Plan-et For the Future” that focuses on spreading awareness about climate change, sustainability and pollution. She also participated in youth leadership programs called “Catching the Spirit” and “Weedbusters”.  A Duke of Edinburgh award winner, she was selected by the British Council Canada to attend the Greening Cities Conference in London last July. She is an athlete (volleyball, soccer, swimming, triathlon and snowboarding), an amateur actor and does volunteer work for a variety of non-profit organizations.


BC ARCHIVES: THE AMAZING TIME MACHINE

The Amazing Time Machine is a BC Archives website that caters to school age children. The website provides access to British Columbia historical documents, images, and other multimedia information in a format that school age children can relate to.

The website groups archival documents (photos, newspaper clippings, drawings, paintings and pages from people’s journals etc.) into 11 collections that range from “Families in B.C. History” for grades K–1, “First Nations Art in B.C.” for grade 4 and “Women in B.C. History” for grade 11.

The Time Machine is the winner of various awards and “best-of” lists and received a five-star rating from the Encyclopedia Britannica Online.


OPEN VAULT WGBH MEDIA LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES

Open Vault is an online media library and archive run by WGBH, a public TV station in Boston that contributes regularly to PBS’s primetime television line up. Open Vault is a searchable archive of media clips that students and teachers will find a valuable source of information and thought-provoking discussions.
