Rural Education Network: Professional Learning SeriesTeachers across the Province have a tremendous resource at their disposal in the form of the Rural Education Network’s Professional Learning Series. The series utilizes Elluminate Live! technology which allows participants to learn and interact with other participants and presenters through real-time audio, visual, keyboard and file-sharing interactions. In practical terms, this means that distance is no longer a barrier when it comes to professional development. That’s the week that the Cowichan Tribes will play host to the 2008 North American Indigenous Games. The Indigenous Games combine culture and sport to create an exciting event celebrating healthy lifestyles and supporting Indigenous youth. Up to 6,000 athletes will travel to Vancouver Island’s stunning Cowichan Valley to compete in 16 sporting events. As well, there will be 3,000 cultural performers. The games will require more than 2,500 volunteers. If you’re interested in volunteering, find out more. In preparation for the games, Education Minister, Shirley Bond announced that the Province is investing $500,000 in new classroom resources that profile Aboriginal people in B.C. Finally, a related project, the Aboriginal Curriculum Integration Project (ACIP), is well worth looking into for teachers and school districts that aren’t already involved. ACIP is designed to raise the profile of Aboriginal people in the curriculum, specifically in the core subject areas and to raise awareness of the North American Indigenous Games occurring in the Cowichan Valley in 2008. New Program and Planning Guide for Moving Up with Literacy Place, 4-6The new Program and Planning Guide for Moving Up with Literacy Place, 4-6 is now available from Scholastic Books. This comprehensive literacy resource builds on the foundation of Literacy Place for the Early Years, K-3. The additional resource materials, including strategy units, guided reading texts and teaching plans, and book club units will be available as follows: grade 4 in Fall 2007, grade 5 in Spring 2008, and grade 6 in Fall 2008. National Student ForumJanuary 11 is the application deadline for this year’s Interchange on Canadian Studies, scheduled for April 26-May 3, 2008 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Ten Grade 11 students from across BC will be selected to participate in the bilingual forum. This year the forum looks at issues involving the theme: “Energy in our future. What kind? What cost? As a result, a new Physical Education 8 to 10 Response Draft (2007) is currently available for review and response. The British Columbia Ministry of Education is interested in receiving feedback on the Physical Education 8 to 10 Response Draft (2007) from education and community partners. Please feel free to share this link with anyone you feel would be interested in providing feedback on the draft document. Feedback can be provided to the Ministry of Education by printing the Response Form, completing it and then faxing it to the location listed at the bottom of the form. The Response Form can be used for either individual or group feedback. The deadline for receiving feedback is December 31, 2007. BC150 Years CalendarThe year 2008 marks 150 years since the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia. BC150 Years is a website run by the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and the Arts that celebrates B.C.’s cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievements. The BC150 Years website showcases an online calendar of special events that are happening around the Province to celebrate this landmark birthday. The calendar will be of particular interest to parents who are looking for educational things to do with their children this coming year. From Abbotsford to Youbou and Zeballos, the calendar lists activities taking place right around the Province.
